Cretaceous Period Information
When did your period take place?
This period was the last and longest segment that took place during the Mesozoic Era. It lasted approximately for 79 million years. This period started about 138 million years ago, and ended 68 million years ago (which ties in with the sentence before it).
What did the earth look during you period?
The earth looked like a vegetated jungle, which made it easy for animals to adapt and/or live during this time. Until about 66 million years ago, a large asteroid slammed into the earth, making it a completely desolate place. It blocked out the sun, making it incredibly difficult to maintain life on earth.

What was the climate like during your period?
At first, the climate was warm and dry with no ice caps at the poles (much like what we know now as the southern states such as Texas and Louisiana). Then, the shifted continents, expanded coasts, and widened oceans had cooled and moistened the planet's climate. The asteroid impact and the resulting fires may have combined with the ash and smoke from the continuing volcanic activity, to significantly reduce global temperatures for a few decades (as a result, was suddenly low temperatures).

What organisms lived during your period?
The dominant plants were cycads, seed ferns, ginkgoes, and conifers. In the sea, marine reptiles such as, sharks that are a part of the ichthyosaurs group, and ammonites that are part of the plesiosaurs group. Both of those organisms were the most common lifeforms back in the Cretaceous (both of those organisms also appear in todays modern world). What was the dominant species during your period? During the Cretaceous period, there was one main dominant animal, it was the dinosaur. Dinosaurs remained the dominant species during the Cretaceous and expanded, branching into less-dominant species. |
What was the environment like during your time period?
During the Cretaceous, the continents continued to drift away from each other, so that the mammals, birds, and dinosaurs evolved separately. By the middle of this period, the movements of the tectonic plates caused a lot of the land to split up (or not be connected anymore). Flowers, flowering trees, and grass became more and more common during that time.
What should travelers pack for safety and comfort?
If you were a traveler coming to visit the Cretaceous period, some things that you will need to be safe and comfortable would be a machete to cut through the various amount of vegetation and to fight off carnivorous animals. In terms of clothing, I would recommend bring jeans, boots, a long sleeve t-shirt, and a jacket. You would also need socks to keep your feet warm and dry. Our resort provides food, shelter, water, warmth, and etc.

What are the main things travelers might see?
The main things that travelers might see are going to be a lot of vegetation, mew herbivores, the first marsupials, primates, and as well as multicellular microorganisms.
What dangers might travelers face?
There are two dangerous things that travelers might face:
1) They might face falling trees in the rain forests (we don't want anyone to witness that).
2) They also might face the first carnivorous mammals, which would definitely be dangerous.

How did your period come to an end?
Our period came to an end for three main reasons:
1) Numerous evolutionary radiations occurred during the Cretaceous (which harmed life on earth, making it hard to live)
2) A major extinction occurred at the end of the period (as you know the Cretaceous was known for the extinction of dinosaurs)
3) 85% of all species died in the End-Cretaceous extinction
